  8. Head of the Gears of War franchise Rod Fergusson has confirmed that rapper Drake and actress Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting, The Riches) were both nearly voice actors for Jace Stratton and Samantha Byrne in Gears of War 3. Initially revealed in a Twitter thread that revolved around memorable video game quotes, Tony Rowe, a tester on the game Jurassic Park: Trespasser, said he remembered a cut line in that game where Driver said “They should’ve sent a policeman or a ninja.” After Driver was tagged in the tweet, she came in to respond to Trespasser producer Seamus Blackley, asking why shy was fired from Gears of War. Fergusson and Cliff Bleszinski quickly hopped on the tread thereafter confirming she was, in fact, once involved with Gears 3. Continue reading… View the full article

  11. Update: Randy Pitchford has publicly alluded to the lawsuits following Kotaku's original story, while Gearbox itself has offered an official statement. In a series of tweets posted this afternoon, Pitchford said "The attacks made by my former friend and colleague have no basis in reality or law. He is simply trying to shake me down for money," while Gearbox's statement reveals the company is filing a grievance in Texas against Wade Callender. Gearbox's full statement to Kotaku reads: Gearbox will be filing a grievance with the State Bar of Texas against our former general counsel Wade for disciplinary proceedings for filing a lawsuit that includes accusations that he knows to be untrue. The lawyer’s rules of professional conduct expressly prohibit the filing of documents that are knowingly false. The tell is within Wade’s claim itself – his use of hedged lawyer language and clever application of quotation marks betray that he knows that the impression he is trying to create is based in lies. We imagine that he used the quotation marks and lawyer language in hopes that will give him some angles of defense when we inevitably take action against him for false statements. Wade is engaged in a shakedown and he’s clearly using deceit and lies to try to cause damage by promoting a narrative that he knows is false. Continue reading… View the full article
  12. While Sony revealed strong sales numbers for the PlayStation 4 over the 2018 holiday, rumors and discussion of the next generation have already begun. But what can the next set of consoles really do to define itself as distinct from the current crop of systems? On IGN's weekly PlayStation show, Beyond!, host Jonathon Dornbush, along with panelists Lucy O'Brien and Brian Altano, discuss what they'd like to see from the PlayStation 5. Watch the clip above as the trio discusses what sort of leap, if not a graphical one, the PS5 could make from the PS4 to interest us, and how the system can learn both from the PS4 and the Xbox One, with the latter's backward compatibility and Xbox Game Pass. 14. Without the backing of Activision, my immediate response was that the industry-rattling divorce between Activision and Bungie may be great for the future of the Destiny franchise. The studio seems happy, based on the inside-sourced tweets from Kotaku’s Jason Schreier. But while Activision was labeled the big bad for many, they did add a lot of support that is now gone. “We know self-publishing won’t be easy,” Bungie said in a company statement. “There’s still much for us to learn as we grow as an independent, global studio, but we see unbounded opportunities and potential in Destiny. We know that new adventures await us all on new worlds filled with mystery, adventure, and hope. We hope you’ll join us there.” While it’s wonderful that Bungie has managed to regain creative control of its intellectual property, there are a lot of challenges ahead for the studio to think about. Here are a few questions we have as Bungie wades into these new waters. Continue reading… View the full article

  23. Plenty of good anime are continuing from the fall 2018 season, such as Fairy Tail’s final season, the latest iteration of JoJo, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, and That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime. But why not ring in the new year with something new? Cozy on up with our seven suggestions for anime you should check out this winter season. See our picks in the slideshow below, or see them listed with a few trailers below that. Mob Psycho 100 II Studio: Bones This is the second season of the 2016 anime Mob Psycho 100, a supernatural shonen following Shigeo “Mob” Kageyama. This season is about Mob learning to manage his growing affections for his friends, and simultaneously suppressing the CLAW threat. This one is worth watching for the beautiful animation alone in its action scenes, but also great for a laugh or two as Mob is finding his way through crushes and the like in that awkward time we call being a teenager.
