Mad6amer 33 Report post Posted February 5, 2012 Well as many of you probably know, SOPA and PIPA, two bills to censor the internet and "prevent" piracy have been killed. Then, not long after, a new bill was introduced, called Protect Children From Online Pornographers Act(PCOPA). I'm not sure if PCOPA is it's official name, but that's what I am naming, for simplicity's sake. This bill has been introduced by Lamar Smith, the same man who introduced SOPA and PIPA. So what is PCOPA? Basically it's another way for the government to make ISP's track every single thing you do. Under this bill, every ISP must track every customer's personal data. This includes, but is not limited to, what you visit online, your personal information(credit cards, bank account numbers, etc.), and everything else in your private digital life, in order to find people who are looking at/posting child pornography online. I think this is a bit extreme to find the small few who actually do this, as it is a complete invasion of personal privacy, and in my opinion, seems very unconstitutional. I see this ending up a lot like SOPA in the start, people who have no idea what the bill is about, and what it can actually do, will support it, thinking they are stopping child pornography, when in reality, they are enabling invasion of privacy. The Atlantic calls this "The Legislation That Could Kill Internet Privacy for Good". Which is exactly what it will do. So what are your views on this bill? I think it's the governments way of trying to accomplish what SOPA was going to do, in a way that seems a lot less harmless(when in reality, it's just as bad). Let us know what you think.
